Yellow-brown tinged owl with ear tufts and orange eyes. The tufts seen on the head are actually head feathers that rise when alarmed.

This nocturnal bird regurgitates food and ‘owl-pellets’ can be found on the ground below its sleeping perch. These will contain bones, hair and feathers of consumed prey. By day it sits on a branch near the trunk. 
Calls at night oe-oe-oe, as well as during courtship. Sometimes roosts in large groups. Prefers using old nests of other birds. Young are noisy.
