A dark hairy fly, the rear section is dark striped and the breast side has dark markings. The black legs are hairy with red toes. The translucent wings have brown veins. The brush-like legs are used to grip the prey, hunting is done at ground level. ⇔ l. 8-10 mm LA: ≈ The MACHIMUS ATRICAPILLUS (Kite-tailed robberfly) is more grey coloured and with partly yellow legs.
