Top surface yellow with black markings, along with the wing edges and dark blue stripe with black edge and orange blue eyes. The eyes are visible from the underside, the yellow and black colouring is paler. A short tail on the rear wing. A notably streamlined body. Caterpillar has a remarkable defence mechanism; 2 orange bumps which excrete a nasty smell when threatened. ⇔ wsp. 60-75 mm LA: ≈ The IPHICLIDES PODALIRIUS (Scarce Swallowtail) and the IPHICLIDES FEISTHAMELII (Spanish royal page) seems more 3-angled in flight. They are lighter yellow and have smaller blue spots on the rear wing, but longer wing tails.
