Dark horse fly with prominent green eyes marked with 3 brown vertical lines. The breast is hairy grey and black and the rear section has orange sides. Found in sandy soil areas, the ♀ bites large mammals for blood and lays her eggs on water plants. ≈ l. 13-17 mm The eye colours are only visible in a living specimen.
