Dark brown shiny water beetle with speckled back, the belly and legs are lighter in colour and on the rear feet a sort of hairy webbing. The eyes appear like dark markings on the light coloured face. Can be found in still water and streams and hunts for small bugs. If the water temperature gets too hot or when it dries up it flies to a new location. ⇔ l. 13-15 mm LA: ≈ The NOTONECTA GLAUCA (Greater water boatman) swims upside down and is more colourful.
