Large light coloured eagle with a dark head with prominent yellow eyes and long, broad wings. The back and wing plumage is dark brown. The under surface is very light to almost white with lined markings only visible up close. The wing’s fingers can be white, and the width of the dark rear edge is variable. The tail is banded, marked on both sides. The dark coloured throat can be yellowish brown for young birds. Often in the air above open ground looking for prey, hovering or floating. Eats mainly snakes and occasional lizards or small mammals. ⇔ l. 62-67 cm These migratory birds are wintering in central Africa and breeding in southern Europe, Asia or even North Africa. Has one egg per season, hatched by the ♀ while the ♂ supplies food. LA: ≈ The PANDION HALIAETUS (Fish hawk) has darker fingers extending inwards on the under surface and finds its prey in the water.
