The upper surface is red in the centre and black with white markings on the outside, the rear wings have large triangular shaped red markings at the edge. Both sexes have the same markings, and the ♀ is a little paler. They also fade when ageing.
The under surface is brownish to beige with white markings. The thin brown lines follow the pattern from the upper surface.

Prefers sunny fields, gardens and parks and can also be seen at river banks. It is often seen in groups.
