Bright green, black-grey marbled newt with a black, grey or brown bottom side. ♂ Have a black, yellow line on the back and tail that extends to a large crest in breeding time. ♀ And young have a bright orange-red line on the back. At the land stage, the skin is velvet like and more golden in colour. They feed on invertebrate and larvae and reach maturity after five years. In their land stage, they are nocturnal. Courting and mating are in their water stage which is standard for newts. ⇔ l. 13-17 cm, including the tail. LA: ≈ The TRITURUS PYGMAEUS (Southern marbled newt) is very similar and living in the south of Spain/Portugal and is a little smaller up to 12 cm. No photo available.
