Terrapin with clear lighter coloured length markings on its body and head which has a red side patch. The shield is dark green and its belly yellow with dark spots. Young still have bright colours but these fade when ageing and the ♂ get long curved claws. ⇔ l. 20-28 cm syn. Red-eared terrapin Originally from North America around the Mississippi, this terrapin was kept as a pet and is now in Europe although only breeding in warmer areas. Known subspecies are the red-eared slider, Cumberland slider and yellow-bellied slider.
