The chameleon has a lizard-like body with light markings and a neck flap. The eyes are bulbous and can be pointing in all directions independently of each other. The sturdy tail is just a little shorter than its body. The skin can have various colours: the chameleon changes to green, blue, yellow or brown. The colour changes are used as camouflage or to reflect its mood, when disturbed it becomes very dark. It lives in trees and bushes and moves slowly looking for prey. It uses its extendable sticky tongue to catch its prey, small bugs and insects. ⇔ l. 20-40 cm syn. Common chameleon, Mediterranean chameleon LA: ≈ The CHAMAELEO AFRICANUS (African Chameleon) is larger and is found in Africa and the south of Greece. No photo available.
