A Large rat-like rodent with long yellow-brown hair and grey underfur. The snout, chin and whiskers are white, only the topside whiskers are black. The large incisors are orange coloured. The rear leg toes have webbing, and the front toes are claws. The round tail is with little hair. It prefers swamps with still water and thick vegetation. Active in the evening and at night eating roots, grasses as well as clamps. ⇔ hbl. 36-65 cm, tl. 25-45 cm syn. River rat, Nutria Originally from South America and now in Europe and North America. LA: ≈ The CASTOR FIBER (Eurasian beaver) is larger and with a broad flat tail.
