Black to grey-brown rat with a long tail. The belly side is dark grey to white. Pointed head with long whiskers, the ears are thin and bald. The tail is single-coloured with many rings and longer than the body length. From close up the coat is multicolored and there are very long hairs between. ⇔ hbl. 16-24 cm, tl. 18-26 cm syn. Ship rat, Roof rat, House rat Lives mainly in the neighbourhood of man and of their grains. Only in southern Europe, you can find them in the wild, they live in trees and eat fruit. Mainly active around sunrise and sunset. The "rat king" is a group of rats that have entangled tails and cannot come loose. They usually do not survive, it happens rarely and usually with young rats. LA: ≈ The RATTUS NORVEGICUS (Brown rat) is somewhat larger, has a shorter two-tone tail and smaller firmer hairy ears.
