Sturdy rat with a short snout, the thick fur on its back is often grey-brown and sometimes black. The belly is light grey. The small ears have little hair. The tail is practically bald and the topside darker in colour and always shorter than its body. It prefers moist not too warm areas like barns, cellars, ditches or landfills. Mainly active at dusk and dawn and living in small groups. ⇔ hbl. 21-29 cm, tl. 15-23 cm syn. Tree rat, Sewer rat, Hanover rat, Norway rat, Brown Norway rat, Norwegian rat, Wharf rat Lives where humans live but found on inhabitant islands as well. LA: ≈ The RATTUS RATTUS (Black rat) can be brown as well, is slightly smaller, but has a relatively longer tail and larger bare thin ears.
