Light grey wings with yellow-brown and dark brown lines. Between the shoulders identifiable dark and light lines. When resting the front part of the butterfly is elevated. It prefers river banks or moist woodlands with poplar, oak and willow. The caterpillar lives in trees where it eats its way through the tree. After 3-5 years it is ready (90 mm) with a purple-red back, yellow-orange flanks and a yellow belly. It then smells like vinegar. It pupates below the surface or in the tree, the butterfly itself does not feed. ⇔ wsp. 65-80 mm Night active and in daytime well camouflaged against a tree trunk.
