A small wader with long legs and a long dark slightly curved beak. In winter plumage the back is light grey marked with a white belly, the summer plumage is stone red on its belly with a similar back marked with yellow, grey and black. On the tail and wing, there is a white band, and the feet extend its body when flying.

It looks for shellfish and prawns in shallow water.

⇔ l. 19-21 cm

Breeds north al the way to Alaska and winters in southern Europe, seen in large flocks along the shore.

LA:
≈ The CALIDRIS ALPINA (Dunlin) has a red back in summer plumage but keeps the black belly and has a straight beak. 
≈ The CALIDRIS CANUTUS  (Red knot) is larger and has a red belly with grey back.
