Large brown-yellow fly. The wings are translucent brown with a yellow base. The body has three dark length lines, and the legs are black with red. The long snout is pointed downwards. Often seen on flowers, lives of other flies but also nectar, the snout is used to suck its food. ⇔ l. 11-13 mm Can be seen in large swarms, sometimes they appear to be dancing. To mate the ♂ offers the ♀ a fly that is consumed during mating. LA: ≈ Other EMPIDIDAE (Dagger flies) are smaller.
