Large dark skimmer with a bright yellow marking on its rear end and a white face. The ♂ has a red marked front body and some broad pale brown markings on its rear that can be red, orange or even yellow for young adults. The end marking is always yellow for both sexes. The ♀ has yellow markings on the front body and yellow to orange markings on the rear body. It prefers peat bog surroundings with lots of vegetation. ⇔ l. 32-39 mm syn. Yellow-spotted whiteface LA: ≈ The LEUCORRHINIA CAUDALIS (Lilypad whiteface) has white cerci (rear end extrusions). ≈ The LEUCORRHINIA DUBIA (White-faced darter) is smaller and darker coloured with fewer markings on its rear. ≈ The LEUCORRHINIA RUBICUNDA has smaller markings on its rear, specifically for the ♀ difficult to see.
