Beige-grey marked butterfly, on its front wing a black line and round marking. The rear wing is greyish with darker veins. The beautiful caterpillar is orange-red with long hairy brushes and central a line of black outlined white dots. When disturbed it curls. ⇔ wsp. 35-45 mm It prefers deciduous woodland and bushes. LA: ≈ The butterflies of this family are all similar, like the ACRONICTA RUMICIS (Knot grass), but the caterpillars are very distinctive.
