Small brown goose with a dark eye ring, belly markings and neck ring, back is mostly pinkish or greyish. A large white patch on the wing and green speculum feathers. Young are paler. It is known for its aggression towards other waterbirds, especially while breeding. Originally from Africa but now widespread across Europe. Like other geese, they mate for life. ♀ makes a nest in trees, both parents take care of the young. ⇔ l. 63-73 cm In ancient Egypt, it was considered sacred. LA: ≈ The ANSER INDICUS (Bar-headed goose) is lighter coloured, more greyish with 2 conspicuous black bars on its head. ≈ The TADORNA TADORNA (Shelduck) has a green head.
