Slender black and white wader with very long pink legs. The body is white and the back and wings are black. The head is white with variable grey or black markings differing per individual. Often while breeding the ♀ has a white head and the ♂ a grey or black cap but, not always.

In flight, the legs extend considerably. Young birds are still brownish stead black. The long legs enable the search for slugs and insects in the deeper water.
