Slim butterfly with grey-brown front wings containing 5 to 6 red markings. The front markings often touch each other. The rear wings are red with a thin black edge. The black body has thin white lines. The head and antennae are black, the legs are black with white. The neck has a specific white line. The caterpillar is green with yellow and black dots at its side, sometimes a dark back and a hairy body. Prefers poor pastures in mountainous areas, like the Alps. ⇔ wsp. 27-33 mm LA: ≈ The wings of the ZYGAENA EPHIALTES (Variable burnet moth), ZYGAENA FILIPENDULAE (Six-spot burnet) and ZYGAENA TRIFOLII (Five-spot burnet} are deeper black with better-separated markings.
