Brown markings with large ear tufts that can be moved independently, orange eyes. Leading wing edge darker in colour, lighter towards the back, almost yellowish with dark lines. ♀ is considerably larger than ♂ and the feathers are more loosely arranged. The young have no ears visible at first. Calls a clear "oehoe". Has good daylight vision in contrast to other owls. ⇔ l. ♂ 60-64 cm, ♀ 65-70 cm One of the largest owls around and the only large owl to have ear tufts. They can live for 70 years.
