It walks slowly despite its long legs. When disturbed it can mimic a bloody nose as a defence mechanism. It is herbivorous with a preference for cleavers. Active at night. ⇔ l. 15-20 mm syn. Blood spewer, Blood spewing beetle LA: ≈ The GEOTRUPES SPINIGER (Dor beetle) has a wider and flatter back shield with length indentations. ≈ The same goes for the PTEROSTICHUS NIGRITA (Black ground beetle) which is smaller and it runs much faster.
