Black Yellow Owlfly. The wing veins are lemon yellow translucent. It has long sturdy black antennae with a large club at the end. Body and head are black with some yellow markings. It feeds on insects from June to August. Mating is around noon when they are warmed by the sun, initially in flight ending in bushes or on the surface. ⇔ l. 25-30 mm, wsp. 45-50 mm Unlike other Owlflies, this one has its wings on each other when resting (photo 2). Owlflies have long slender front wings with a span of approx. 40-50 mm. LA: ≈ The rear wings of the ASCALAPHUS LIBELLULOIDES (Owly sulphur) are partly translucent and more white. It can be seen earlier in season and rests with spread wings.
