Large orange butterfly with brown-black markings at the upper surface with the front wings nicely curved. The rear edge has two rows of dots ending in an intermittent black edge. The undersurface of the rear wing has yellow patches and towards the edge a row of dots with a purple haze. The specific marble like markings is not present for this subspecies despite its name. The caterpillar is black-white striped with yellow thorns covered with black hairs. Often found on blackberry or raspberry in central to south Europe. ⇔ wsp. 40-50 mm LA: ≈ The ARGYNNIS AGLAJA (Dark green fritillary) is a little larger with triangularly shaped patches on the rear edge and marble like markings on its under surface.
