Large brown butterfly with a small white marking on its front wing with a dark curved line with a variable brightness. The ♂ has large comb antennae. The sturdy caterpillar has a dark coloured hairy body with yellow-white hairs, the head has orange-red markings with black and white. When threatened it curls suddenly. ⇔ wsp. 35-66 mm LA: ≈ The LASIOCAMPA QUERCUS (Oak Eggar) is larger with clearer markings and a wider light coloured area, the caterpillar, however, is darker.
