Chocolate brown head, white chest and belly, light grey wings, black tail tip. After breeding the head becomes white with darker markings. The young are more brown, taking 2 years to develop their adult colours. Meanwhile, the head becomes a lighter brown in summer. ⇔ l. 37-42 cm syn. LARUS RIDIBUNDIS Very common bird, however, looks like certain rare species. Its scientific name refers to "laughing gull".
