Black wings with white bands, black tail and outside feathers are white. ♂ blue-grey head and tail, orange-brown face, chest, belly and back a little darker. While breeding the beak is blueish otherwise pale in colour. ♀ light brown back with a grey belly. The pattern on wing and tail are same as male. Singing is learned by example from other finches, often the father. ⇔ l. 14-15 cm syn. Common chaffinch Used to be kept for their lovely singing. At one time it was believed they could sing better when blinded, later the cage was just covered. Partly migratory bird.
