Completely black with white forehead and beak, red eyes. Long wide toes acting like flippers. Young initially have a red, sometimes bald head with long feathers and a red beak. Dives often but prefers to run over the water when threatened instead of flying. They also hide below the surface. To launch they run on the water surface. Young are easy prey if no chicks survive a new nest is started. ⇔ l. 36-38 cm LA: ≈ Often confused with the GALLINULA CHLOROPUS (Moorhen) which have a red beak.
