Slim dark grey fly, striking eyes, brown with wide pink-red cross lines and a white face. The head top is notably marked, the antennae are to the front with an orange base and a white gloss. The dark wings are completely speckled with light grey. ⇔ l. 7-10 mm The larvae feed on snails, as all the family members larvae do. Once, adult, they feed on flower nectar.
