A black head and back, white belly, wings black with white markings, black tail tip. Red eyes and legs with a long orange beak. Often seen on grassy patches looking for food. Once settled in a territory they are very keen to stay put. Even when conditions deteriorate they stay. ⇔ l. 40-45 cm They lure predators away from the nest by pretending to be crippled when followed they fly away. The national bird of Faroe Islands.
