Dark brown to shiny black, firm cockroach with long probes and firm hairs on the legs. ♂ has brown wings on the back, which makes it appear lighter in colour. At ♀ the wings are so small that they no longer stand out, this also applies to young cockroaches. ⇔ l. 22-29 mm syn. Waterbug Despite the wings, this species can not fly. Lives often in the vicinity of kitchen waste, especially in Europe. Can also be found in nature in Asia. Preference for dark, slightly damp places.
