Big blue coot with bright red blaze and beak. The red legs have very long toes. The body is a darker blue and sometimes looks almost black, the head is bright blue, the eyes are dark red and the lower tail feathers are white. Sexes are the same but ♂ are bigger. Young birds are greyish blue with beak and legs and a light chest. In case of unrest, the white rump is shown when it walks away in the reeds, it does not fly often. The long toes are very suitable to step over the reed. ⇔ l. 40-50 cm syn. Western swamphen In Europe only in a few places in Spain and Italy. Imported in southern France. Subspecies live in Australia, south-east Asia and Africa and are less bright blue. Resident bird. LA: ≈ The GALLINULA CHLOROPUS (Moorhen) is much smaller and black brown with green legs.
