Light yellow with black patched butterfly with red spots. Along the trailing edge of the wings is a wave-shaped black drawing. The undersurface of the wings has the same colours. When the wings are closed the body is clearly visible, it is very hairy and black with white mottled. ⇔ wsp. 35-45 mm The eggs are placed on the plant family ARISTOLOCHIACEAE (Birthwort family). LA: ≈ The ZERYNTHIA POLYXENA (Southern festoon) lacks the red spots on the forewings. Has blue spots next to the red on the back edge of the rear wings. Only in southern France do they both occur.
