Brown marked sandpiper with a long red beak with a black tip. The belly is grey striped and the wing and tail have a white band. While breeding, black-brown back with red feather edges, head and breast. In winter the brown becomes greyer. Young are more brown-yellowish coloured. Often at waterfronts in groups, sleeping standing on one leg. ⇔ l. 38-40 cm Since 2015 the national bird of the Netherlands. LA: ≈ The LIMOSA LAPPONICA (Bar-tailed godwit) breeds in northern regions. While flying the legs are not extending as much and it has a white V shape on its back. ≈ The NUMENIUS ARQUATA (Curlew) is much larger and with a curved beak.
