Brown coloured sparrow, ♂ grey top and cheeks specifically while breeding, brown marked back, black chin and grey-white throat and belly. The beak is black while breeding otherwise it is grey. ♀ has paler colours, brown marked back, belly beige with a brown spot around the eyes. The young resemble the ♀ though even paler. Widespread and often found in urban areas. ⇔ l. 13-15 cm LA: ≈ The PASSER MONTANUS (Tree sparrow) is smaller, has a red-brown head with black cheeks and is mostly found in rural areas. ≈ The ♂ PASSER HISPANIOLENSIS (Spanish sparrow) has a red-brown head and black stripes on the belly side.
