Robust black beetle with many small pits and scars on back and neck shield. The head ends in a kind of shovel. Especially the front legs are shaped in a way that they can dig well. Often seen on poo of mammals. These are rolled into a ball that they take with them. The poo is buried and eaten later. ⇔ l. 25-35 cm If 2 beetles walk around with a ball of poo, these are ♂ and ♀. On a spot the ♂ digs a hole under the poo and below this the ♀ will lay the eggs. The poo is food for the larvae. If another ♀ comes along, a fight will follow until one wins, she is allowed to lay the eggs. LA: ≈ The SCARABAEUS SACER (Sacred scarab) has a smooth black shield. The pill turning of poo is the same. This applies to more beetles from the genus SCARABAEUS.
