Robust black beetle, the head edge resembles a shovel, with 6 cartels in a semicircle. The antennae are short and end in a sort of fan. The front legs are firm and also serrated. The back is smooth and convex and the beetle is high on the legs. Often seen in meadows where horses or cows walk, they gather shit to eat, this is turned into balls and buried. ⇔ l. 25-40 mm When 2 beetles are on their way with a ball of poo, it is a couple. ♂ digs the hole and ♀ puts an egg in it. The poo is meant as food for the larva. LA: There are several types of beetles that live on manure. ≈ The SCARABAEUS CICATRICOSUS is slightly smaller and flatter and has small pits on its back shield and neck shield.
