Brown spotted gecko with round fingers, there are many colour variations. Wide triangular head. The body is wide and flat and is provided with lashed scales, especially on the tail. The large light eyes have vertical pupils. Large adhesive pads are placed on the bottom of the toes so that they can run on virtually any surface. Mainly active at night, but also during the day mainly for sunbathing. Often found in and around houses. Lives of insects. Themselves are prey for snakes and other lizards. They often have mites (visible as small red dots between the toes). A popular pet, therefore they can be found in Asia and America as well. ⇔ l. 14-16 cm including the tail. syn. Salamanquesa, Crocodile gecko, European common gecko, Maurita naca gecko LA: ≈The TARENTOLA ANGUSTIMENTALIS (Eastern Canarian gecko) is much lighter in colour and seems to have a translucent skin.
