Dark brown bird of prey with red-brown shoulders and a white rump and tail end. The underside of the wings is lighter. The feathers just above the yellow legs are also red-brown. The beak is yellow at the base and ends in a dark grey point. The ♀ is slightly larger than the ♂. The young birds are lighter in colour, but this can vary a lot. 

Lives in a group and hunts together both rodents and birds. The youngsters are also brought up together. This is not known to any other bird.

PARABUTEO means, resembling the buzzard. Occurs in the middle and South America. Is widely used in falconry, so that in Europe sometimes stunted specimens are seen. In Mexico City, they are used to dislodge the pigeons.
