Even grey tern, the belly side is grey too. The legs are red. In the summer a black hood, white cheeks and a red beak. In the winter, the beak is black and the cap is smaller, the forehead is just as white as the cheeks. The rump is also white, the legs remain red. The sexes are drawn alike, the young birds resemble the winter dress, but the back is still brownish. Lives on the waterfront of lakes and marshes. Catches insects and other creatures, rarely fish. ⇔ l. 23-26 cm Found in southern Europe. The northern breeding birds migrate south in the winter. LA: ≈ The STERNA HIRUNDO (Common Tern) and STERNA PARADISAEA (Arctic tern) are a lot bigger, moreover they have a white belly side.
