Flat slim beetle with an orange-red back shield with 8 black dots and a blue-black head and shoulder shield. The beetle is quite hairy with white hair. The legs and feelers are black. Often seen on flowers of the APIACEAE (Carrot family), it mainly feeds on other insects that visit the flower, but also with nectar. The hairs distribute pollen from flower to flower. ⇔ l. 10-15 mm Preference for warmth, mainly in southern Europe. Imitates with its striking colour poisonous creatures, but that is a distraction in this case. LA: ≈ The TRICHODES APIARIUS ( has black stripes instead of dots on the back-shields.
