Inconspicuous yet colourful bunting. Brown black mottled wing feathers, grey head and collar, orange pink belly side, yellow eye ring and throat and a narrow yellow moustache line from the beak to the neck. The beak and legs are pinkish. Both sexes have the same markings but ♀ are somewhat more vague than ♂. 

Happy at grain fields with forest edges or wooded banks, often on the ground looking for insects and other animals, after the brood also seeds are eaten.

A migratory bird, which hibernates in Africa and breeds in Europe. Rare bird, with a large habitat but in some countries including the Netherlands and Belgium, it does not occur anymore. In France, it is considered a delicacy.
