Large black-white cuckoo with long tail and crest. Grey crown with crest, yellow cheeks, and white throat, chest, belly and underside tail. The back and wings are dark-brown with white dots. The tail end is dark from above, but with white spots on the underside. Young birds do not have a crest yet. 

Chooses high open places to sit, then the long tail balances well. If they sit more forward, the wings are kept low. Eats especially caterpillars that are first stripped of the hair by rubbing them over a branch. Like the CUCULUS CANORUS (regular Cuckoo), puts his egg in the nest of another bird, usually with crows and starlings.

Summer in southern Europe. Wintering in Africa and also in southern Spain. 

LA: 
≈ Sometimes confused by the long tail and high sitting position with the CYANOPICA COOKI (Iberian magpie), which occurs in the same area, but is slightly smaller and blue.
