Small brown butterfly with black cross stripes on the wings, a hairy head. And a small white spot on the front wing tip. The black spots on the wings can vary. ♂ has strikingly large sprung probes, ♀ has simple wire probes. She is more grey-brown on the wings, he more orange-brown. They are very hairy, possibly because they are still active in the autumn. The caterpillars are greyish to reddish brown and look like bark, with 2 points on the abdomen.
