Slim black-orange wasp. The abdomen is very narrow at the front, the thick backside is orange with a black tip. The head is black with a white face, head and back are grey-hairy. ♂ has completely black legs, ♀ has partly red legs, she gets bigger than ♂. The wings are yellow-brown and reach to the black rear. ♀ catches grasshopper larvae and grasshoppers and anesthetises them to bury them with an egg, so that the larva has food. Once grown they eat nectar from flowers. ⇔ l. 16-25 mm LA: ≈ The AMMOPHILA SABULOSA (Red-banded sand wasp) has relatively longer wings and a narrower abdomen and therefore appears to be more slender.
