Large deer with a snub nose and stocky appearance. The male is darker with antlers without hoes. The female has clear yellow-white dots without a stripe. The winter coat is without spots, in the female the spots become fainter. Both sexes can have manes. Occurs in wooded areas with a lot of undergrowth. Prefers herbs and blackberries. They have an extended call with up to 10 different sounds. Originally from Japan but now established in many other countries. ⇔ hbl. 134-149 cm, sh. 80-90 cm, tl. 12-15cm syn. Spotted deer, Japanese deer LA: ≈ The DAMA DAMA (falling deer) is about the same size but heavier with a more pointed snout. The male has a hoe antler and the female has a line under the dots on the flanks.
