Red-brown deer, grey-brown in winter. Lighter belly and rump. Only the ♂ has antlers that can become larger dependent on age and in winter it grows a mane. The young have white markings. They live in herds and are mainly active in the evening and night. In spring the antlers are shed to grow back in summer. ♂ makes a distinctive noise during mating the 'burl'. ⇔ hbl. 165-260 cm, sh. 114-140 cm, tl. 12-20 cm, antlers ♂ 70-90 cm
