Shiny Pinkish to chestnut brown back with a clear white belly, legs, rump and tail. There is a white marking on the long nose. Both genders have black white striped ribbed horns. The young are initially light brown with a darker nose marking, the horns grow relative early.

Mainly active early in the morning or late afternoon. Live in groups of same genders.

⇔ hbl. 120-210 cm, sh. 84-160 cm, tl. 10-60 cm, horns 35-70 cm

There are 2 subspecies that differentiate in the white marking on the nose. The DAMALISCUS PYGARGUS PYGARGUS (Common Bontebok) has one stain that has a smaller part between the eyes, the smaller part stays connected. The ♂ are very territorial both in and outside mating season
The DAMALISCUS PYGARGUS PHILLIPSI (Blesbok) has two white stains with some brown hairs in between. The  ♂ defends their territory only in breeding season.
