Red-brown to yellow-brown fur with a large head, sturdy legs and a long tail. ♂ is larger and has a mane on its head, neck and shoulders. 

Lives in groups with a dominant male and female, other large cats live solitary. ♀ stay in the same pride all their lives, ♂ leave after some years after which they are solitary or in a ♂ group.
♀ catch the most food for the group. ♂ eat first then the ♀ and finally the young can feed.
